Very soon we will be leaving this place we’ve called home for over 10 years.
10 years ago hubby and I built this home and put so much of our sweat equity into it. From him installing electrical with his dad, to the tiled floors I spent many hours putting down and the little black terrace railing my own dad installed for us.
Over 10 years ago, when we were in the process of building, we had sold our home in town and were staying in a dumpy little duplex until we could move into this home. One day, I stopped by the duplex to change clothes after work. I put on some old shoes, took off my rings to they didn’t get damaged, grabbed the two dogs and headed to the home below to work on tiling some more. That night I came home so tired and went quickly to sleep. The next morning, getting ready for work, I went to grab my wedding ring and it was missing. I looked everywhere for it. Suddenly it had dawned on me that the landlord was showing the duplex the night before and it hit me that it had been taken. Very early that morning, around 6:00 a.m., we called the police department to file a report. We had a very nice officer come to the duplex to do this. I was devastated and so hurt that someone could do something so cruel. I was also aware that there was no way for the officer to really get those accountable to fess up to taking my ring. I went to work that day so depressed about it, something I cherished so much.
While sitting at my desk that morning, almost in tears listening to the radio, there was an announcement. One of the Twin Towers had been hit. It was 9/11 that day. Perspective, my ring was something small and replaceable.
From the start, this home has so many memories, through our children and pets, through many fights and makeups. We’re excited for our new adventure, but will always cherish this home and how it held us through the good and the bad.

Thank you for sharing your story and best of luck with your new home.
I am sure you’ll love your new home but it’s so hard to leave a current home at least you can take all your memories with you.
good luck with your new home!
Oh my goodness, GORGEOUS home and amazing reminder about perspective (though, what a horrible thing for a person to do
)
Rachel, I have moved over a dozen times over the years and I have learned that we hold the memories in our hearts and not IN the homes. Sure, if you were to go back to this beautiful home that you are leaving behind, you will SEE the fingerprints on the walls and the excited kids on Christmas Day. But if you close your eyes, you can relive the SAME memories and beautiful moments in your mind, and that is a beautiful thing! Congratulations on the big move.
